Liviu's Photography Workshop
Written by: Reper21 Association

After crossing the entire wild Delta, the Passenger ends his voyage in an amazing settlement that seems to have sprung out at the edge of the world. We dock in front of a slightly dusty palace but grandiose in a neoclassical stile with colonial influences. It is the former head office of the European Danube Commission ( E. D. C.), a crucial institution during the “Belle Epoque” which transformed Sulina from a small fisherman village, into a veritable international port with a cosmopolitan bourgeoisie, prosperous and in tune with the trends of the grand capitals.
We descend onto the quay which is packed with wagons that are parked in all directions along with a multitude of people. We do not encounter any cars because Sulina is not linked to the national road network and can only be reached by ship.
One can see the old Lighthouse , hidden behind the E. D. C. palace. A town museum awaits its visitors on the ground floor, and the spiraled stairs carry us to the top from where we can see in the distance the meeting place of the Danube with the endless see.
On the cliff, an old merchant house draws our attention to its beauty: red and white contrasts, large windows, balconies with metal embroidering. The building houses the photo workshop of Liviu Simioncescu. The works exposed represent the natural beauty of the Delta, the multicultural past of the city as well as moments of the present. Liviu loves the inhabitants of Sulina amidst whom he was born and his lovely photos are his gift to this community found at the end of the Danube.
